How To Keep Your Aquarium Water Healthy?

Whether you’re well experienced in the art of fishkeeping or you’re just now considering setting up an aquarium in your house, aquarium maintenance is sure to have crossed your mind. To keep an aquarium healthy, whether saltwater or freshwater, you must be prepared to devote your full attention to it. From pH monitoring to water changes, buy water care products for aquariums and consider the following tips to maintain a healthy and aesthetically pleasing aquarium:

  • Ensure That Your Water Is Well-Conditioned – Your fish’s long-term well-being is dependent on the quality of the water in their tank. Tap water contains many properties such as minerals that need to be balanced out. By adding biological agents or supplements, you can remove these properties from the water. If not, your pet fish and aquatic plants will not be able to survive.
  • The Water Should Be Acclimated To Your Fish – The first step in introducing your fish to their new home is to acclimate them to it. Due to their delicate nature, many fish species are prone to go into shock without it. Consult a pet counsellor to learn about proper acclimation methods for your pet fish. It may be a good idea to test the water chemistry before starting the process. Depending on the level of your tank, you may have to acclimate your fish for a little longer.
  • Place Fish In A Bag And Let Them Float – Acclimate your fish to the aquarium’s water temperature by floating your fish in their sealed bag for at least 15-20 minutes. At least a quarter cup of aquarium water should be added to the sealed bag every five minutes. Remove some of the water from the bag and lower it into the water to let your fish swim freely. Making acclimation easier, this process combines the chemistry and temperature of your aquarium.
  • Ensure That pH Balance And Other Chemical Levels Are Maintained – An aquarium’s pH level measures its acidity and alkalinity. With the help of a pH test kit, you can monitor the pH levels of your tank. Generally, freshwater fish thrive in aquariums with pH levels between 6.6 and 6.8. For saltwater fish, pH levels between 7.6 and 8.4 are ideal. Your aquarium’s nitrate, nitrite, and ammonia levels will also need to be checked regularly. These levels vary greatly, of course, depending on fish species and aquarium types.
  • Keep The Water Temperature Consistent – The temperature of the water in your aquarium should be safe enough to support aquatic life. A major change in your tank’s temperature can be fatal to your fish. Make sure your tank is not placed near cooling vents or in an area that receives a lot of sunlight. The water temperature in freshwater should stay between 72°F – 82°F, whereas, in saltwater, the temperature should remain between 75°F – 80°F. For the most effective results, it’s wise to research the most appropriate temperature levels for each fish species. It may be necessary to purchase a water heater for your aquarium if it is too cool to keep your fish alive.
  • Clean your aquarium – Having healthy aquarium water is a direct effect of the cleanliness of the tank itself and all the other items and decor within the aquarium. Be sure to vacuum aquarium gravel and clean and inspect the filter as well. Algae is sure to have grown on most of the equipment, plastic plants and other decorative items within the tank so rinse them well. If necessary, you can also trim live plants. All of this contributes to maintaining the health of your aquarium water.

By appropriately setting up and maintaining your aquarium regularly, you can enjoy all the health benefits it can provide while minimising any concerns you may have. Taking a few minutes out of your day to check up on the aquarium could save you the trouble of having to deal with a more significant issue later on. It isn’t all that time-consuming to perform routine water changes and test your tank water every week. At the end of the day, you get to bask in the self-assurance of a job well done and enjoy tranquil sessions of relaxation where you can simply enjoy the humble aquatic life carrying on within your well maintained aquarium.
